The Dern Short is for when weekend plans include unearthing ancient ruins or just poking around the flea market looking for a lamp. It’s high waisted with a functioning coin pocket and front pleats for a relaxed look that can handle the miles you will walk in them. Packable and practical.

 

Our patterns come in PDF format for use at home, copy shop or projecting with both size ranges included. The DD range comes in sizes 0 - 20 and the JJ range comes in sizes 16 - 34.

This pattern is available in 2 size ranges; DD 0-20 and JJ 16-34

Chloe is wearing a size 4 from the DD size range in a Mason Chino Twill from Fabric Wholesale Direct in color Olive. Her measurements are; 32"/25"/35" at 5'9".

Gabby is wearing a size 16 from the JJ size range in a 8oz Twill. Her measurements are: 42"/36"/46" at 5'8"

Fabric Recommendation

This pattern was created for most pant weight non-stretch fabrics: denim/twill/linen/gabardine, etc. However, we believe you can make everything out of anything, feel free to contact us for advice if you’re feeling adventurous.

    Challenging pattern for an intermediate sewer

    This was one of the hardest things i have ever made. I had the most trouble with the waistband and sewing around the little pocket. that was the trickiest part for sure. would have loved a reference video to watch on this part. Overall glad i pushed through and finished my short. I ended up elongating the shorts to the knee as my goal was to reproduce the Willy Chavarria BORRACHO SHORT. They are pretty spot on!

    Perfect shorts

    I love these shorts! I made them in a soft brown cotton twill. True to size and the instructions are perfect, all five pockets came out so well and the fly instructions were the best that I have seen.

    Excellent instructions! I really struggle with sewing fly fronts - practically a phobia about them - but these were really clear and came out perfectly, as have the back welt pockets. I'm very pleased with the results.

    Perfect Pleats

    This is the perfect pleated short pattern. The little pocket detail puts it over the top! Excellent drafting as usual from DJ. I just completed sewing my first pair and plan to sew another already!
