The COE Trouser

No. 5 - a love letter to pants

The COE Trouser

Pants…. I love them. Denim and I have a particularly close bond. In college I was always the one in my friend group to wear jeans instead of sweatpants to brunch after a night out.

The years since college has seen me try all the trends from jeggings to boot cuts (worn with a pointed heel and statement necklace, obvs.) to the cropped high waisted silhouette made popular by Jesse Kamm (currently collecting dust in my drawers).

Recently there was a video going around about where to find “the pant”. The question stemming from a woman wondering where to get a modern pant and the requirements being the following;

  • Not jeans

  • Not leggings

  • Not as put together as a tailored pant (pleated trouser)

  • Not as casual as a slouchy cargo

  • Not linen, bc it’s not always time for linen (not really relevant here)

  • Loose and without a weird belt (optional)

Enter the Coe Trouser.

A dream pant in the making. I’ve been on the hunt for a flat front trouser style pant with a little more attitude and who doesn’t love a self belt with hardware?! Pleated pants are great but I find a lot of the pleats to start pointing to the crotch with wear….anyone else? (Coe Pinterest Board)

These should give the looser feel of a pleated trouser while still maintaining a slim fit around the waist and hip with plenty of room for mobility or squatting in Claires case. The side seams are shifted to the front and continue wrapping towards the leg opening making a soft barrel shape.

Now fabric is a big factor here. This silhouette can handle all fabric HOWEVER not all fabrics create an equal pant. Lighter weights (~5 oz) give you a drippy look while heavier weights (~10 oz and dependent on treatments) are much more structured.

On-seam pockets will gap a bit more in the heavier fabrics so consider adding pocket stays (instructions in pattern). OR size up at your hip and take the waist in for an even more exaggerated look.

Self belt….I have nothing to say here except Just Do It and thank me later.
