The KURT Top

No. 3 - and so it goes....

The KURT Top

Where my knitters at? (In the key of where the party at by jagged edge)

I’ve come to the point in my career where I can do sewing patterns in my sleep. And that’s more to say I’ve been knocked down and made enough mistakes over the last 15 years to qualify for this. Knitting however has been like being in a canoe in the middle of the ocean, double over head….in a storm. To anyone reading this that has experience, professionally or recreationally, in developing knitting patterns you have my deepest respect.

They both melt and massage my brain at the same time and this little number was no exception. Even something that is technically “simple” the grading will always get you (true for sewing patterns as well but much easier to jeuje).

Franki is wearing a size XL in Wolle’s Cotton Boucle

This is the Kurt Top, named for a favorite author of mine, Kurt Vonnegut. A sarcastic and quick witted writer that wore loads of sweater vests. The resurgence of the trend has peaked my interest but my preferences lean this silhouette more towards a top than a vest; wider set neck opening, deeper vee, broader cross shoulder. (Kurt Pinterest Board)

A fairly speedy knit done in the round, bottom up. Starting with the wide lower band in twisted rib on US 5 (3.75 mm) then changed out to US 7 (4.5mm) for the rest of the body done in a mock rib. I used Purl Soho Picnic Cotton for the pink version and Wolle’s Cotton Boucle for the off white version. Both great yarns but oof the Wolle’s stole my heart!

The techniques used to knit this style are pretty beginner friendly and all have easily searchable videos on the YouTube. So if you’re new to knitting or have only done a few simpler designs (scarf) and are ready for the next challenge this would be a great option.

Kaya is wearing a size S in Purl Soho Picnic Cotton.
  • 1 Size Range : XS - 3X

  • Max Bust : 50” (127 cm) / Max Waist : 45” (114.3 cm)

  • Fingering / Sporting weight yarn

Now off to continue a waffle crew neck for winter. Mmm mohair in 90 degree weather….

In other fun news I am opening up a tester call for the upcoming Coe Trouser. This is a personal favorite, I’ve made 3 pairs so far and have plans for more. I’ve been favoring longer length pants these days (the crops have been collecting dust in my drawer) and more trouser-type silhouettes, particularly with flat fronts. Why we Americans say pants and trousers I do not know, but the difference to me is between leaning more casual and leaning more dressy, trousers being the ladder.

The test period will be 3 weeks starting July 12th, file format is home printing only and compensation will come in the form of a $50 gift card to Daughter Judy (plus the finished Coe Trouser obvs). I am looking for people across all sizes from 0 to 34 and best fabrics are anything pant weight; linen, denim, gabardine, tweed, etc.

Click the link below to sign up! Testers will be notified next Monday July 10th. (If you are not chosen this round there are 2 more calls coming soon and I may just use this round depending on the pool size!)

The YouTube channel kicks off with not 1 but 2 videos! The first is the new Ask JUDY series where I’ll answer some of your recent questions. FBA on the Isola? Best measurement to start with for the Worship Jeans? Any plans to make swim or underwear patterns?

If you have any questions for future episodes don’t hesitate to text the hotline (1-985-ASKJUDY), dm via Instagram or email qcc@daughterjudypatterns.com. These will be monthly for paid subscribers and quarterly for everyone!

The second video will be the first of the Home EC series (very excited to hear how you all find these). I’ve mentioned before how I find full sew alongs to be a bit of a snore. I recognize this 100% is coming from someone who’s been sewing for a very long time and I know everyone is at different levels in their sewing however… do you need me to show you how to sew a side seam together? Probably not.

This first video will be for the Genra Shirt and I’ll cover the trickier bits like sewing the shirt placket with ease, 2 ways of getting a crisp curve on the shirttails, the cuffs and how I’d hack to a short sleeve.

Next month will also be the first paid subscriber Bulletin Board that will come with a free pattern (whaa?! yes you read that correct and yes there will be more). This quarters pattern is a sweet little sock that is a great scrap buster (I slightly dislike that phrase but don’t know what else to call it, leave your thoughts in the comments!)

Plus I’ll be hosting a live online class where you can sew along with me while I make a few pairs. This will be August 24th at 5pm PST (8pm EST) and if you can’t make it, a recording will live on a paid subscriber YouTube channel.

The donation recipient for the Month of July and all of Q3 is Clean Clothes Campaign who fight to ensure fundamental rights to garment workers by lobbying governments and companies.

They are behind the Good Clothes Fair Pay campaign demanding living wages as the standard for all garments imported into Europe.

A final note : In this first half of the year we have raised just over $1000 in donations from your purchases. Thank you for all the support and let’s keep it going! Dare I say we can hit $2500 by New Years Eve?!

Thanks. I made it.
