In German there is a term for one’s sense of longing to travel, Fernweh. Literally from fern (far) and weh (pain). Usually we think about the pain of homesickness; wanting desperately to come back to something familiar and stable. But once the summer season starts picking up, we get a certain notion inside of us to explore the unknown, pack up and hit the road.
My first trip of the year is back to Vegas (this weekend) on behalf of my cousin’s birthday. Then I’m finally going on a me-vacation (after many many years of travel based around other people’s weddings) to Europe in September. (The fernweh is real for that trip though I thoroughly enjoyed the weddings I attended)
I’m already imagining my suitcase full of linen, the fresh caught Sicilian seafood, the extra book I’ll bring just in case I finish the first (I won’t) and time spent with friends I haven’t seen in a decade.
One important suitcase addition for both desert and mediterranean travel is sun protection. Last month’s Extracurricular gave you SPF recs while this week’s Loose Leaf gives you your new favorite summer accessory; the Clipper Hat. It’s as if a scarf and a baseball hat had a baby. A accessory with some attitude.
